When did you learn to swim?

Do you remember when you learned to swim?

Was it in your own pool, a community pool or a

neighbor’s house? Did you have formal lessons?

At age three and a half my parents sent me to

swim lessons at Martin County pool, and within two

weeks I jumped off the high dive. “Bold and fearless”

as my mom says; some things never change! I

suppose with a dad building pools and with both

parents formerly life guards there was a little chlorine

in my blood from birth.

Not all kids in Florida get swimming lessons at a

young age, and there are countless adults in Florida

who have never learned to swim. The drowning

rates in Florida are staggering, with the equivalent of
