10 Florida Pool Prosm • August 2022 FSPA CHAPTER NEWS THE S OO ON S RVICE When you tell most people that you own a pool service company, they drum up visions of you hanging by the pool in your flip flops, with a straw hat on having a good ol’ time. To most people, when they hear “pool guy” they imagine a very easy job for stoners. The public at large put the “pool guy” maybe a hair above “lawn guys.” The truth is that we are tradesmen and tradeswomen. There is no trade out there as versatile as ours. Pool contractors and pool techs have the knowledge from many trades. We need to understand chemistry, electricity, plumbing, hydraulics, masonry, steel work, and now that pools run off your smart devices, we have even had to learn portions of computer hardware and information technology. There is no other trade that encompasses this broad of a spectrum. When we refer to our employees as pool guys or pool gals we are doing them a disservice. We need to start empowering them and help them understand they are tradespeople, not just cleaners. At my company we are not pool guys, we are pool technicians, we are pool mechanics, we are pool contractors. My employees can hold their head high and know they have specialized knowledge and they do a job that is unique which not everyone can do. Here are a few things that need to be happening in our industry if you want to be respected in your market. First things first, knowledge is power As business owners in the pool industry, we need to make sure we are giving our employees the best training available. That means sometimes work will not get done so you can send your team to a training facility. That means you will have to give up more of your own time as well to train. Your team should be meeting regularly with a brand-specific rep and learning how to properly program, install, and maintain equipment. There is nothing worse than getting a call from a customer with a complaint that your tech doesn’t know what they are doing. That kind of phone call literally translates into YOU don’t know what you are doing. Yes, this is going to cost you money up front but the benefits to you, your customer and your employee We don't just get bugs out of pools By Tommy Diaz, 365 Pool Service /
