The Chapter had an overflow crowd for the advanced module CE class on Thursday, April 12. Jennifer Hatfield did a superb job presenting the material to the nine building officials and 25 contractors in attendance. Dustin Underwood, Aqua Blue Pool and Spas, also assisted in clarifying some of the technical portions of the presentation.

After the course ended Rob Dimare, Pentair, gave a quick synopsis of one particular program available for their products in which figures could be plugged into for calculations. Jennifer advised the group that other programs are also available from other manufacturers and organizations. Thank you to all who attended and especially to Jennifer for coming over from Sarasota to teach the class.

Marie Sheba with Brevard County Parks and Recreation joined us at the beginning of the above meeting for a presentation. Last year the Chapter partnered with Marie and the Palm Bay Aquatic Center to provide swim lessons to children whose families could not afford the cost of lessons. A $500 donation from the Chapter and a matching grant from the Swimming Pool Education and Safety Foundation of $500 provided swimming lessons for more than 60 children. This year at our meeting, Marie again accepted checks totaling $1,000 for the same purpose. We thank Marie and her staff for working with our Chapter on this worthwhile endeavor. I will keep you posted on their results during Swimming Pool Safety Month.

The Chapter is also looking for volunteers to help with another safety event on Saturday, May 26. We will partner again with Infant Swimming Research and their Not One More Child Drowns Event at Wickham Park. The Chapter has participated in this event the last two years with a tabletop and volunteers passing out coloring books, pool watcher badges and showcasing water-related safety devices. Please consider volunteering a couple hours of your time for this great event. Contact Carl Moody, Solar Energy Systems of Brevard, if you are interested.

The Chapter recently made a decision to work with Pro Health and Fitness Center and the Brevard Public Schools (BPS). BPS has three five-year grants for after school care for Title 1 schools to target children that identify as “at risk” for various reasons. The program is at no cost to the families. Currently, there are nine schools (four in Cocoa area, five in Palm Bay, and beginning in mid-April there are four additional schools in the Melbourne area).

Pro-Health & Fitness Center is tasked with providing weekly fitness, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle information to the kids. They scheduled a Water Safety Day which encompasses the many aspects of safety in and around a pool area; this includes “Reach, Throw, Don’t Go”, how to throw a ring buoy, lifejacket use, swimming safety, etc. There will be stations and each child experiences an activity at each station. The Chapter is donating 1,000 Pool Watcher Badges as a take-home item for the children to utilize and to help teach the parents how to keep the children safe. The Chapter is committed to partnering with other entities and utilizing funding to train and educate children and parents on the safe use of our products.

The next Chapter meeting will be held on Thursday, May 10 at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s in Melbourne starting at noon. The agenda will be sent out prior to the meeting. See you there!
